Sleeping Bear Gateways Council (SBGC)

The Sleeping Bear Gateways Council (also simply referred to as the "Gateways Council") evolved in 2018 from the Citizens Council for the Sleeping Bear Dunes Area. The predecessor Citizens' Council was formed in the 1970s in response to the creation of the National Lakeshore. It played an active role in issues involving park boundaries, access, and private property rights. Learn more by clicking here.

More recently, the SBGC has been working to address Seasonal Workforce Housing needs in the gateway regions to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Phase I included a Housing Study completed in Summer, 2020 that helped to qualify the housing challenges while quantifying the housing deficiencies.

  • As a result, the SBGC has underwritten the creation of a housing exchange – now available on the SBGC website. The SBGC is seeking landlords to populate the Housing Exchange. Please share and have those interested contact SBGC here.

  • Phase II will begin to implement a plan to spearhead additional efforts to address the housing deficiencies. The scope of Phase II is greatly dependent on the council’s ability to achieve funding through securing a USDA grant.

    • Letters of support are needed. Here is a request from SBGC. A sample letter from Iron Fish Distillery can be found here. Grant deadline is March 31, 2021

  • Join SBGC for a virtual town hall meeting (2 scheduled):

    • Wednesday, March 17th, 3-3:45 pm

    • Thursday, March 18th from 5-5:45 pm
